Redrow Eastern’s charity gala at Hatfield Place

Redrow Eastern’s gala at Hatfield Place on 18 September 2026 brought together local tradespeople, developers and guests for an evening raising money for a childhood cancer charity. It was a great turnout, with a beautifully presented venue and plenty happening around the room.

My coverage combined group portraits at the branded arrival backdrop with natural photographs throughout the evening. The auction, raffle and live band gave the collection a lively progression from the welcome through to the celebrations later on.

Arrival portraits, fundraising and the evening atmosphere

The photographs begin with the room and the groups at the entrance, then move amongst the tables for conversations, dinner and the fundraising activities. There are reactions to the presenter, laughter between guests and closer details from the evening.

The later photographs follow the live band and guests enjoying the dance floor. Select an image to view it larger. Hatfield Place is near Hatfield Peverel, close to Chelmsford in Essex.

Photographing the welcome and the moments between the tables

I enjoyed the balance between the step-and-repeat group photographs as people arrived and moving around the main room as the event unfolded. The entrance portraits gave guests a chance for a photograph together, while the dinner and entertainment brought out plenty of unplanned moments.

The venue was very well laid out, the band was great and there were some amusing moments during the auction and raffle. The reactions around the tables were a big part of the evening to photograph, alongside the people leading the fundraising.

Summer Underground: Breakin Science event photography in Barking

Summer Underground at Eutopia WHS in Barking on 5 September 2026 took me back to my musical roots. The music was loud, the venue was packed and there was so much energy amongst a mix of familiar faces and people I hadn’t met before.

Breakin Science, Jungle Mania and Drum & Bass Classics were amongst the promoters bringing the event together. I enjoyed getting amongst the crowd for natural and posed photographs, alongside coverage of the performers and the activity around the stage.

A large outdoor crowd facing a distant stage beneath a clear evening sky

The performers, the crowd and the energy between them

The photographs move between the outdoor gathering, the stage and the people enjoying the music. There are closer performer portraits, hands and phones raised towards the stage, photographs with friends and moments of laughter away from the front.

Sunlit crowd scenes sit alongside the stronger colours of the stage lighting, giving different views of the event. Select an image to view it larger. The original Summer Underground listing records the venue, date and advertised programme.

Back amongst the music

There was a lot to enjoy about being in the middle of this one. Familiar faces would appear between photographs, while elsewhere I’d meet someone new who wanted a picture with their friends. That mix of conversation, music and movement kept the coverage varied.

I like bringing the people on stage and the people in front of it into the same collection. A performer with a microphone or a DJ at the mixer gives one view; a reaction at the barrier, a raised hand or a smile between friends gives another. Together they bring back more of the atmosphere.

Ladies Day photography at Chelmsford City Racecourse

Ladies Day at Chelmsford City Racecourse is as much about the people and the occasion as the racing. The outfits, groups of friends and busy atmosphere gave me plenty to photograph, with horse racing forming the backdrop to the spectacle of the day.

I enjoyed working there: people were friendly, everyone had made an effort with their outfits and there was always something happening around me. These photographs bring together racegoer portraits, the setting and the social side of Ladies Day at Great Leighs, near Chelmsford in Essex.

Photographing the social spectacle of Ladies Day

What stays with me is how much of the occasion happens around the racing: friends arriving together, people stopping for a photograph and the attention that goes into choosing an outfit. Those moments give the photographs a different character from the sporting action alone.

Another memory from photographing Ladies Day is the boy band Blue performing. Live entertainment added to the atmosphere, alongside the racing and the people enjoying their day out.

A 40th birthday at The Old Regent Ballroom, Essex

The Old Regent Ballroom in Stanford-le-Hope was a beautiful setting for this 40th birthday on 15 August 2026. A lovely family, a DJ and guests who were happy to get dancing made it an enjoyable evening to photograph.

This collection brings together the party’s details, conversations around the tables and photographs from the dance floor. Closer portraits sit alongside the laughter and smaller moments around the room.

Family moments and the birthday dance floor

The birthday cake, decorations and venue details help set the scene, with guests talking, laughing and taking photographs together as the evening gets going. Later images move towards the DJ desk and the dance floor beneath the mirror ball.

Photographing the people enjoying your party

I enjoyed working with the family and following the party around the room. The DJ and guests brought plenty of fun to the evening, while the photographs around the tables kept the quieter conversations in the story too.

For a birthday, those different views work well together. A photograph with someone you came to celebrate with sits alongside a moment of laughter or dancing that you might otherwise have missed.

A 50th birthday at Colchester Rugby Club, Raven Park

A lot of effort had gone into this 50th birthday at Colchester Rugby Club on 19 September 2026. The Raven Park venue was dressed for the occasion with black and gold details, illuminated birthday numbers and an amazing cake, ready for an evening of family photographs, music and dancing.

There was black tie, fancy dress, a DJ and a dance-off, with guests bringing plenty of personality to the party. I photographed a mixture of posed groups and natural moments, from people catching up over the meal to the fun on the dance floor.

The photographs begin with the birthday setting and portraits together, then move through the meal and conversations around the room. Later in the collection, novelty hats, photo props and the illuminated dance floor add another side to the evening.

A milestone party with plenty of personality

The cake and decorations showed how much thought had gone into the evening, but the guests made it fun to photograph. There were family groups to bring together, conversations to catch around the tables and plenty happening once the dancing started.

I particularly enjoyed the energy of the dance-off and the mix of natural and posed photographs throughout the party. The more formal portraits and the playful pictures belong together: both are part of how people chose to celebrate.

Birthday party photography at Yiamas, Brentwood

Yiamas in Pilgrims Hatch, Brentwood, made a great setting for this 50th birthday on 12 September 2026. Singers, dancing and a lively group of guests gave the evening plenty of entertainment to photograph.

I captured a mixture of posed and natural party photographs, with time for pictures together as well as following what was happening around the room. These highlights bring together a group portrait, venue details and closer views of the live singing.

Live entertainment and photographs together

The venue and entertainment were great, and the family and friends were a pleasure to photograph. Singing and dancing brought the party atmosphere, with opportunities for posed photographs alongside the moments happening naturally.

For a celebration with live entertainment, I like to keep the performance and the people in the same story. A photograph together and a closer view of the singer capture different parts of what made the evening enjoyable.

The Hadleigh Suite became a vibrant party venue for this 70th birthday on 7 August 2026. A cosy setting in Hadleigh, Essex, was filled with family, friends, birthday decorations and the sort of warm welcomes that make an evening feel special before the dancing has even started.

The family were lovely, the cake was amazing and there was plenty of fun to photograph. My coverage mixed natural moments and reportage with posed photographs together, keeping the people at the centre of the celebration.

Five smiling adults with their arms around one another in front of balloons and a birthday sign

“I was thrilled to be greeted by Jonathan at my party. First impressions he was very friendly & professional. He made my guests all feel comfortable & he mingled amongst everyone throughout the evening capturing great magical moments. Loved the group photos, I forgot how many Jonathan took so it was a thrill to look through the photos reliving the memories of a wonderful night & also seeing my friends & family enjoying themselves in candid shots. Thank you Jonathan the photos are amazing I love them all. I will definitely recommend you. My son booked you for my 70th party as a birthday surprise… wow very special memories to treasure. Thank you again. X”

Warm welcomes, family portraits and the dance floor

Hugs and greetings run through the photographs alongside group portraits by the birthday balloons. The decorations and purple dragon cake add their own details, while conversations around the room show the quieter moments between the celebrations.

As the party got going there was dancing, laughter and colourful glow sticks amongst the guests. Select a photograph to see it larger. The Hadleigh Suite website has more about the venue in Essex.

A birthday surprise with photographs to return to

Jill’s son had booked the photography as a surprise for her 70th birthday. It was lovely to be part of that gift, and her review describes the pleasure of looking back through both the group photographs and the moments she hadn’t noticed during the evening.

That’s something I enjoy about photographing a family party. There are pictures everyone knows they’re part of, and others that happen while they’re talking, greeting someone or getting involved on the dance floor. Together they give you more of the evening to look back on.

For your own milestone celebration, see my party photography in Essex and event photography prices. Tell me about your venue, timings and any family photographs you’d particularly like.

Softwire AI conference photography at St Mary’s, Marylebone

It was good to be back with Softwire for their AI conference on 9 October 2026. This time the setting was St Mary’s Church in Marylebone, London: a beautiful backdrop with quite a contrast to the cutting-edge nature of the talks.

Softwire are a regular event client, and Freya and Nayi had once again put a huge amount of work into making everything run smoothly. I photographed the event as it unfolded, from the talks and activities through to food, drinks and the conversations later in the evening.

People gathered beneath balconies and a purple-lit ceiling in a large hall

“We had the absolute pleasure of working with Jonathan for our corporate festival, and he was fantastic from start to finish! He captured the atmosphere, energy and all the little moments of the event so beautifully. The photos are amazing and really bring the whole weekend back to life. Would 100% recommend!”

A familiar team in a distinctive conference setting

Returning to Softwire means seeing the different ways the team brings people together, from a summer festival to an afternoon of talks and discussion. Freya and Nayi had once again put a lot into the programme and coordination.

There were games, drinks and food as well as the sessions. They even made sure I had some canapés, which was very welcome.

A 21st birthday party in Great Waltham, Essex

A garden reception, marquees ready for the evening and a family who had put so much thought into the occasion: this 21st birthday in Great Waltham was a pleasure to photograph. The party took place at a private property near Chelmsford on 30 August 2026.

There was a full catering team, entertainment and a DJ, with plenty happening from the first drinks outside through to the evening celebrations. The family were lovely to deal with, and my photographs bring together portraits on the entrance steps with the natural moments that show how the party felt.

“Jonathan was very easy to work with, he just got on with taking photos, which I loved.”

Garden drinks, family photographs and a marquee celebration

The collection moves from arrivals and conversations in the garden to dinner beneath the marquee lights. There are photographs together at the doorway, quieter portraits amongst the guests and the laughter and raised hands as the entertainment got everyone involved.

I made time for the posed groups as well as following the evening as it unfolded. Once the party was in full swing, the photographs became as lively as the room. Select an image to view it larger.

Making space for the family photographs and the party

The organisation really showed. From canapés in the garden to the dinner setting and entertainment, a lot had gone into making the celebration work, and it gave me plenty to photograph without needing to interrupt what was happening.

I enjoyed the contrast between the photographs on the steps and the atmosphere inside the marquee later on. A portrait together gives you a record of the people who came; a laugh across the table or someone joining in with the music brings back another part of the memory. Both matter when the photographs are for the birthday and the family.

Softwire Festival 2026 at Browning Bros, Essex

A hot, sunny day, a Ferris wheel above the trees and activities happening in every direction: Softwire’s festival at Browning Bros on 4 July 2026 was a brilliant occasion to photograph. The venue at Great Tey, near Colchester, gave everyone space to spend time together, try something new or simply sit back and enjoy it.

Freya and Nayi had put an amazing amount of work into bringing the event together. There was magic, circus entertainment, robot battles, water sports, bands, yoga, bumper cars and creativity throughout the day. I met some great people and was sad to leave.

Three guests smiling together outdoors with a Ferris wheel blurred behind them

“We had the absolute pleasure of working with Jonathan for our corporate festival, and he was fantastic from start to finish! He captured the atmosphere, energy and all the little moments of the event so beautifully. The photos are amazing and really bring the whole weekend back to life. Would 100% recommend!”

A day around the lake, activities and festival tents

The photographs move between the performers and their audience, the dodgems and the lake, with portraits and smaller moments between the activities. Face painting, fabric printing, food and games add their own details to the day.

Later photographs bring in the music, raised hands in the tent and time around the fire as the light faded. Select a photograph to see it larger. Browning Bros has more about the venue and its outdoor events.

A different view of a corporate festival

Taking group photographs from the Ferris wheel was one of the more exciting parts of the day. It was an unusual vantage point and certainly added a little edge to the job. Back on the ground, there was always something happening, from people on the water to guests laughing their way around the dodgems.

I enjoyed the moments between the organised activities just as much: a conversation on a hay bale, someone taking a break with a book or a group finding a spot on the grass. Those photographs help connect the bigger scenes and give the collection more of the feel of being there.
