1st Birthday Party at Thamesbreeze, Party Photography in Leigh-on-Sea
Leigh Rd, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex

There’s something lovely about photographing a party in your own hometown. Maybe it’s the familiar faces, or the fact that you know where the best light’s coming from before you even walk through the door. Either way, when I was asked to photograph a 1st birthday party for a brilliant couple I know from our old antenatal class, I jumped at the chance.
The party took place in March 2025 at Thamesbreeze Bar and Restaurant on Leigh Road, a bright, stylish venue that always makes for great event photos. It was a proper spring day too, sunshine overhead, Leigh Broadway buzzing with people, and the kind of warmth that makes everyone linger a little longer in the street for a chat. I always enjoy taking photos in Leigh-on-Sea, but there’s something especially nice about events like this, relaxed, full of joy, and packed with familiar smiles.

A Jungle-Themed Party with Local Charm
This one was jungle-themed, with stuffed lions and tigers watching over a crowd of happy kids and chatting adults. The birthday boy was dressed to impress, although, like a true one-year-old, he slept through a good chunk of the party. He did, however, wake up just in time for the cake, a brilliantly themed jungle number complete with a big green leaf and tiny safari animals.
As a birthday photographer in Leigh-on-Sea, I’ve been to my fair share of first birthday celebrations, and they never fail to deliver in terms of atmosphere. There’s always a great mix of guests, family, friends, other little ones, and this party was no different. Everyone had made an effort too. People were dressed up, the decorations were spot-on, and the buffet was absolutely on point (I may or may not have made eye contact with a pizza slice mid-shot).
Natural Moments and Candid Shots
One of my favourite things about photographing parties like this is capturing the little unscripted moments. You’ll see in one of the photos below a guest mid-laugh, pint of beer raised in the air, completely unaware of the camera and all the better for it. Another shot shows the children playing Twister on the floor, limbs tangled and giggles echoing across the room. I also managed to grab a beautiful shot of the birthday boy’s mum with her own mother, a real, happy moment that just felt full of love.
The venue was alive with light, and the kids were absolutely fascinated by the ceiling lights, pointing and babbling away in that way only toddlers can. There was a mini ball pit in one corner and a game of pass the parcel that ended with squeals of excitement as each layer was peeled away. Everyone got stuck in, and every child left with a goodie bag and a generous slice of cake to take home.

Food, Fun and First Birthday Feels
The drinks were flowing, champagne, beers, and soft drinks, and the food didn’t disappoint either. Classic finger food, a few party favourites, and enough pizza to fuel an afterparty, for the grown-ups at least.
When I photograph events like this, especially smaller, more intimate ones, I try to keep my presence to a minimum. My aim is always to blend in, not disrupt. That way, the moments I capture stay natural, no forced smiles or awkward poses, just people genuinely enjoying the day. It’s that candid party photography style that people tend to appreciate, especially when it comes to family gatherings.

Quick Turnaround and Lasting Memories
After the party, I got straight to work on editing the photos. I always try to return event galleries as quickly as possible, particularly with birthdays, where people are often excited to relive the day or share pictures with family and friends. Obviously, how fast I can turn things around depends on how busy I am, but I know how much these memories mean.
The mum messaged me the next day with a lovely bit of feedback:
“Delighted with the photos of my son’s first birthday, Jonathan captured the day brilliantly, lots of natural shots and precious memories. Thanks so much Jon!”
That’s really what it’s all about, capturing moments that matter to people, especially when they’re celebrating something as special as their child’s first birthday.
