This is exactly the sort of coverage I enjoy most. It’s not about lining people up and firing a flash at them. It’s about reading the room and capturing genuine moments as they happen: the laughs, the handshakes, the quick chats, the “how is it already this festive?” expressions.

Rylan was a natural centre of attention, full of energy and easy with guests, which meant the interactions felt relaxed and photogenic rather than forced. Around that, the cast and crew kept the atmosphere warm and lively, and it all came together in a way that felt very Cliffs Pavilion at Christmas.

This community showcase raised money for Junior Masters and brought together the same dancers who were selected to perform at Disney in Florida. Parents from across the Southend area filled the hall to see what the performers have been working on this year. Thanks to generous support the evening raised £1,300 for the cause.

From the moment I arrived at the venue, I could see this would be a lively evening. Mexican hats and colourful décor set the tone, and the food looked incredible, especially the jalapeño poppers, which were a big hit with guests. The Legra Tap & Kitchen team had everything laid out perfectly, with plenty of space for guests to mingle, relax, and later, dance.

For this type of reception, I use two DSLRs with a 35mm, 85mm, and telephoto lens. I worked without flash, relying on natural light for that timeless, authentic look. Shooting with a wide aperture allowed me to create beautiful background blur, perfect for intimate portraits and storytelling shots.

Once at Chelmsford’s Riverside Leisure Centre, I was warmly welcomed by the Essex Roller Derby team, with Jade stepping in as my guide for the day. After speaking to a few of the crowd the enthusiasm of the supporters was clear, meanwhile the teams were gearing up, and a sea of referees in stripes patrolled the track. It felt a little overwhelming at first, stepping into a high-octane subculture I didn’t yet fully understand.

The day kicked off fast. From the 10am opening, the hall was bustling – families browsing, dealers chatting, and collectors on a mission. That early rush meant my approach had to be quick, observational and spontaneous,  exactly the kind of candid, natural event photography I love.

As the crowd settled and the pace slowed, I switched gears. I had more time to get creative, picking out details, interesting characters, and compositions that captured the essence of the fair. Whether it was the texture of old signage, the gleam of a 1930s watch, or a quiet moment between a seller and buyer, I focused on creating thoughtful, high-quality imagery that goes beyond just “snaps.”

This one was jungle-themed, with stuffed lions and tigers watching over a crowd of happy kids and chatting adults. The birthday boy was dressed to impress, although, like a true one-year-old, he slept through a good chunk of the party. He did, however, wake up just in time for the cake, a brilliantly themed jungle number complete with a big green leaf and tiny safari animals.

As a birthday photographer in Leigh-on-Sea, I’ve been to my fair share of first birthday celebrations, and they never fail to deliver in terms of atmosphere. There’s always a great mix of guests, family, friends, other little ones, and this party was no different. Everyone had made an effort too. People were dressed up, the decorations were spot-on, and the buffet was absolutely on point (I may or may not have made eye contact with a pizza slice mid-shot).
