Junior Masters Dance Festival Photography in Shoeburyness Southend on Sea
Shoeburyness High School Caulfield Road, Shoeburyness, Essex

The Junior Masters Dance Festival lit up Shoeburyness High School on 7 June 2025. I was invited to document the charity showcase in the Wendy Owen Hall, capturing local dancers from across Southend on Sea as they performed for family and friends. It was a wet and windy evening, the lighting changed constantly, and the energy was fantastic.

About the event
This community showcase raised money for Junior Masters and brought together the same dancers who were selected to perform at Disney in Florida. Parents from across the Southend area filled the hall to see what the performers have been working on this year. Thanks to generous support the evening raised £1,300 for the cause.
The Shoeburyness School venue and local pride
The festival took place in the Wendy Owen Hall at Shoeburyness High School, a school with a strong performing arts focus. The hall is named in honour of Wendy Owen, who helped build a culture of enthusiasm for the arts at the school. The corridors are lined with photographs of former pupils who have gone on to do great things on stage and screen, so it was the perfect setting for a celebration of local talent.

Standout performances
Among many highlights, Isabelle Dobbs performed a number of pieces. Isabelle won the Dance World Cup in 2024 for a ballet duo, and her control and presence were clear to see. Coaches including Wendy Headford and her daughter Michaela watched proudly as students showcased their work to an appreciative audience.

Photographing the festival
Event photography is dynamic. You adapt quickly, read the room, and work with whatever the light gives you. For this show I packed a range of lenses as I did not know exactly what to expect. The changing stage lighting and fast movement made it a technical challenge. I balanced shutter speed for motion, aperture for depth, and ISO for noise control, and moved to angles that kept backgrounds clean while preserving the atmosphere. I am pleased with the final selection and enjoyed the chance to learn and refine as the evening unfolded.

Community and charity impact
All of the dancers are local and the event was arranged by one of the parents, which made the evening feel personal and supportive. The festival raised £1,300 for Junior Masters, a brilliant result from a single night and a real credit to everyone involved.
