A 21st birthday party in Great Waltham, Essex
A garden reception, marquees ready for the evening and a family who had put so much thought into the occasion: this 21st birthday in Great Waltham was a pleasure to photograph. The party took place at a private property near Chelmsford on 30 August 2026.
There was a full catering team, entertainment and a DJ, with plenty happening from the first drinks outside through to the evening celebrations. The family were lovely to deal with, and my photographs bring together portraits on the entrance steps with the natural moments that show how the party felt.

Garden drinks, family photographs and a marquee celebration
The collection moves from arrivals and conversations in the garden to dinner beneath the marquee lights. There are photographs together at the doorway, quieter portraits amongst the guests and the laughter and raised hands as the entertainment got everyone involved.
I made time for the posed groups as well as following the evening as it unfolded. Once the party was in full swing, the photographs became as lively as the room. Select an image to view it larger.
Making space for the family photographs and the party
The organisation really showed. From canapés in the garden to the dinner setting and entertainment, a lot had gone into making the celebration work, and it gave me plenty to photograph without needing to interrupt what was happening.
I enjoyed the contrast between the photographs on the steps and the atmosphere inside the marquee later on. A portrait together gives you a record of the people who came; a laugh across the table or someone joining in with the music brings back another part of the memory. Both matter when the photographs are for the birthday and the family.
