A 50th birthday at Colchester Rugby Club, Raven Park

A lot of effort had gone into this 50th birthday at Colchester Rugby Club on 19 September 2026. The Raven Park venue was dressed for the occasion with black and gold details, illuminated birthday numbers and an amazing cake, ready for an evening of family photographs, music and dancing.

There was black tie, fancy dress, a DJ and a dance-off, with guests bringing plenty of personality to the party. I photographed a mixture of posed groups and natural moments, from people catching up over the meal to the fun on the dance floor.

The details, the family photographs and the dancing

The photographs begin with the birthday setting and portraits together, then move through the meal and conversations around the room. Later in the collection, novelty hats, photo props and the illuminated dance floor add another side to the evening.

A milestone party with plenty of personality

The cake and decorations showed how much thought had gone into the evening, but the guests made it fun to photograph. There were family groups to bring together, conversations to catch around the tables and plenty happening once the dancing started.

I particularly enjoyed the energy of the dance-off and the mix of natural and posed photographs throughout the party. The more formal portraits and the playful pictures belong together: both are part of how people chose to celebrate.
