Ladies Day at Chelmsford City Racecourse is as much about the people and the occasion as the racing. The outfits, groups of friends and busy atmosphere gave me plenty to photograph, with horse racing forming the backdrop to the spectacle of the day.
I enjoyed working there: people were friendly, everyone had made an effort with their outfits and there was always something happening around me. These photographs bring together racegoer portraits, the setting and the social side of Ladies Day at Great Leighs, near Chelmsford in Essex.

Photographing the social spectacle of Ladies Day
What stays with me is how much of the occasion happens around the racing: friends arriving together, people stopping for a photograph and the attention that goes into choosing an outfit. Those moments give the photographs a different character from the sporting action alone.
Another memory from photographing Ladies Day is the boy band Blue performing. Live entertainment added to the atmosphere, alongside the racing and the people enjoying their day out.
